A topic about onions from Morget Trading

Insight

The onion originally comes from Central Asia, Southern Europe and Egypt. It is a perennial vegetable of the Alliaceae family named: Allium cepa var. proliferum

The onion thrives best on light, sandy, nutrient-rich soil and needs a sunny location. This makes the fertile fields of Upper Egypt an ideal place for this agriculture.

Culture

The Egyptian onion is a plant whose stalks can reach a height of up to 80 cm.

Inflorescences appear at the end of these stems at the beginning of summer, from which numerous bulbs then emerge. Seed production is achieved through phenotypic selection.

These seeds of the varieties Giza 6 and Giza 20 are grown in dedicated nurseries located in the growing area from August.

The young plants are then planted in October and November on well-prepared fields through gentle treatment, a balanced biological fertilization and a carefully selected pre-culture.

The young plants are then planted outdoors in well-prepared fields in October and November.

These soils are optimally prepared through careful tillage, balanced biological fertilization and carefully selected previous crop cultivation.

Depending on the variety and the date of sowing or planting, the harvest takes place when the onions are ripe and their leaves have dried up.

Later they have to dry on the ground for a few days to increase their quality and durability.

At the end of this stage, the bulbs are firm, compact and virtually free of root debris.
